The school

Seljaskóli began operations in the fall of 1979. The first school year only had instruction for the youngest school level, but since then, the number of students increased, up to a maximum of 1500 students, when it had a double and triple-session schedule. Today, the school is a comprehensive primary school with a single-session schedule for students from grades 1 to 10, with about 650 students and around 100 staff.

The after-school program Vinasel (Friend Bungalow) is at Seljaskóli and the name of the youth center Hólmasel (Holm Bungalow) is the same as the street name.

School council

A school council that serves as a forum for consultation between the principal and the school community on the school operation. According to Article 8 of the Compulsory School Act No. 91/2008, every primary school must have an active school council.

Phone-free Seljaskóli - Compact

Phone-free Seljaskóli – Compact

  • Students must not have phones during school hours, including class periods, recess, lunch, on school grounds, swimming, field trips, school excursions, traveling to and from sports activities, or in the school before the first class of the morning.
  • If a student brings a phone to school, they and their guardians are responsible for it.
  • If a student brings a phone to school, it must be turned off (airplane mode) and kept in a bag or in the student's locked locker (applies to upper primary school). If a student has a smartwatch, they must turn off phone notifications. AirPods or other similar wireless headphones are not allowed during school hours.
  • Students must set their phones so they don't make sounds or vibrate (use airplane mode).
  • The phone compact also covers other smart devices, such as smartwatches, if they disrupt or could disrupt teaching and concentration.

If phone-free Seljaskóli rules are not followed (adolescent level):

  • If a student violates the phone-free policy, a teacher or staff member will instruct the student to take the phone to the secretary or a school administrator. The phone will not be returned until the end of the school day. If the student doesn't comply with this request, they are removed from class and guardians are contacted.
  • The student receives a disciplinary note in Mentor and a standard email is sent to the student's guardians.
  • If the phone compact is repeatedly violated (three times), the student's guardian must pick up the phone at school. A meeting is then scheduled with the student and parents to decide next steps together. The student must then either leave their phone at home or turn it in at the office at the beginning of the school day and pick it up at the end of school for the next two weeks. After that period, the student gets another opportunity to keep their phone in a locker or bag.

Other:

  • In implementing this phone compact, we expect school staff to be role models and generally not use phones in student areas.
  • Parents and guardians can always contact students by calling the school office. Students can also be allowed to make calls from the school office.
  • An exception to this might be diabetes, for example.
  • It's important that families and the entire school community work together to implement these rules in a positive and successful way. We hope for a positive response and full cooperation from all.
  • Phones will be allowed at dances and other after-hours school events outside regular school hours.
  • We at Seljaskóli are starting this project with the children's best interests in mind. Over the school year, we will review what has gone well, what should be reconsidered, and whether any part of the policy needs to be refined regarding a phone-free Seljaskóli.

Primary school meals

School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with parents and enhance their involvement in schooling. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

Seljaskóli library

Seljaskóli operates a library. The library is an information center for students and staff.

School council

Primary schools must have an active school council that serves as a forum for consultation between the principal and the school community on the school operation. The main role of the school council is to be a forum for all representatives of the school community to consult on school matters.

Assessment of school operations

The goal of assessing and monitoring quality is to provide insight into schooling, its outcomes, and its development.

School districts

There are several school districts in Reykjavík and each child has priority in their district school. Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school districts, applications, and admission. Here is information on which streets belong to Seljaskóli's school district.
