The Epic Bookworm
Over the past few weeks, we at Seljaskóli have worked hard to prepare for the nationwide Epic Reading Challenge, which is now underway. To mark the challenge, we decided to create an epic bookworm. The idea behind the bookworm was to make the reading challenge a shared project for the whole school—something we build together and literally watch grow every day. Every hour of reading and every fabric strip counts, becoming part of the whole. This way, we work toward the same goal across all grades, making reading visible in a fun way.
For every hour students read, they receive a fabric strip to add to the worm's body. As reading hours add up, the worm grows longer and more colorful.
A lot of work went into the epic bookworm. Our talented creative arts teachers, Margrét Gyða and Hrafnhildur, designed and built it from scratch. Ugo, our building superintendent, built the frame that holds everything together. Students have since taken over, gradually filling the frame with their reading hours.
It is wonderful to see the worm come to life, but we are not done yet! With just over a week left in the challenge, now is a great time to keep reading, reading, and reading.
How epically big and colorful will our bookworm be before the challenge ends?
