Epic Reading Challenge 2025

reading challenge

The Epic Reading Challenge starts today!

We at Seljaskóli are participating in the Epic Reading Challenge, a national competition for students in grades 1-7 organized by Art for All.

Time: Sept. 15 – Oct. 15
Purpose: Read as much as possible and collect reading minutes.
What counts? All book reading (except textbooks). Listening to audiobooks also counts.

The school that collects the most reading minutes wins the title "Most Epic Icelandic Reading School" and receives fantastic book prizes. The school that reads the most in each region also receives special recognition.
The winner will be announced on Icelandic Language Day, Nov. 16, on the television program Málæði on RÚV.

How it works at Seljaskóli:
Parents and guardians should log home reading as usual. This includes listening to audiobooks and any other pleasure reading. It's easy to log all reading in the “Læsis” app. For those who prefer, a special reading booklet for daily recording is also available to print from the challenge website.

Every Friday during the four-week campaign, the homeroom teacher will tally each student's reading minutes. Seljaskóli's total reading minutes will then be submitted to the challenge at the end of the period.
In front of the cafeteria, we'll have a motivational wall with large ice creams that we'll decorate with reading minutes.

At the end of each week, students receive ice cream sprinkles for reading minutes: one sprinkle for every 15 minutes read, which they attach to the ice creams. 🙂We're aiming to have our ice creams covered in beautiful decorations by the end of the period.

The Epic Reading Challenge is primarily a fun, school-wide campaign to promote reading. For some students, this type of challenge is a great motivator and boosts their interest in reading, while others can participate on their own terms or simply continue reading as usual. The goal isn't competition between students but to encourage each person to read a little more than they would have otherwise. Just as importantly, this brings us all together to work toward a common goal that builds school spirit at Seljaskóli. 🙂
